the subjective perspective of an analytical optimist

When Was the Last Time You Did Something for the First Time?

So often, our days are built around a routine. Our lives are composed of endless cycle of work, meals, family, household chores, and social obligations.

Think back to some of your best experiences in life. When were you the happiest, most excited, and completely engaged in what you were doing? I would bet those moments weren’t spent holed up in a tiny cubicle or meticulously picking lint off of freshly laundered clothes. I would venture to guess that a majority of those memorable experiences were spent doing something for the first time. Often being stretched to our limits and learning something new will make us feel at the top of our game, and even the simple act of trying something different can boost our enthusiasm, happiness, and well-being.

The ultimate experience of “flow” occurs when a challenging task overlaps with one’s skills (many of which may be yet undiscovered). When we’re comfortable with our life and routines, it’s often difficult to take the first step towards trying something new, despite the potential benefits. Even if the new experience isn’t great, we’re often proud of ourselves for at least stepping out of our comfort zone and opening ourselves up to new possibilities.

This spring, my mom bought a gardening book and several packs of seeds and proposed we plant a garden. Despite knowing little to nothing about the art, I help plant zucchini, green beans, spinach, sunflowers, green peppers, and snow peas. Though not everything survived the arid heat, carefully following instructions and caring for those tiny seeds has led to incredible results – 12-foot tall sunflowers, 2-foot long zucchini, handfuls of green beans, and a huge sense of accomplishment.

The product of several weeks of nurturing

For the past few summers, my best friend and I have taken art classes for fun. In the past, we’ve done printmaking and acting (which I ended up dropping out of because I’m so shy). This summer we signed up for portrait sketching. I’ve never considered myself very creative or artistic, but I love engaging in art in crafts and dabbling in different creative endeavors for fun.

This week, I attended the first of eight sketching classes. For the first hour, the diverse group of students listened attentively as the instructor taught us the basics of sketching, shared tips about facial and body proportions, and addressed common mistakes that we should be aware of. For the next two hours, we applied what we had learned to sketching a skull. It really is amazing how much you can pick up in just a few hours.

“I can’t draw,” but maybe I could learn…

Get up today and do something for the first time – no matter how big or how small. Eliminate the phrase, “I’m bored” from your vocabulary. Start saying “yes” to new experiences; spend your free time thinking about and planning ways to open your mind and expand your repertoire. There is so much to see, learn, and experience. Brainstorm ways to enhance every aspect of your life. Think about your dreams and transform them into your reality. Here are some areas to consider:

  • Education/Learning
  • Travel
  • Health/Fitness
  • Family
  • Love/Relationships
  • Friends
  • Food
  • Career/Business
  • Volunteering/Charity
  • Money/Finances
  • Art/Creativity
  • Music/Dance
  • Play/Hobbies

Trying something for the first time doesn’t necessarily have to be huge. I don’t expect you to go skydiving tomorrow, backpack across Europe, or become a vegan. Things like signing up for a class that sounds interesting, paying for someone else’s meal in a drive-through, trying a foreign food, or taking a spontaneous day trip to a new location are just as wonderful, and well-worth celebrating.

So, when was the last time you did something for the first time? If it’s been awhile, perhaps it’s time to start integrating more new experiences into your life. You’ll quickly notice how incorporating lots of exciting and engaging moments into your everyday life – no matter how small they may seem – will bring more joy, contentment, and fullness into your life.

What is going to be your next “first”?

Ha ha ha! A wonderful post, and to make things better, I was listening to this song while reading your post http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75QC59i-dIY

  3. Hmm I’m trying to remember what it was. You do have me thinking now. I shall come up with a new new :)

  4. Inspirational! Thanks for the gentle push.

I love this! This is EXACTLY what makes me miss school so much! Congrats on veggies btw :) I really wanted to take up gardening this year, too. My mom grows some stuff in her garden, and she LOVES it. I was going to try to grow a few things until I moved. I might still try to, but I ended up doing a lot of painting. Still want to do the gardening though! Great post! :)

  6. legionwriter says:

Love your enthusiasm! (Though I forgot the word “bored” the day I had kids).
    Bravo to new things!

  7. I’ve been working for the Obama campaign this summer as a volunteer. It’s a new and exciting experience for me and I love it.

  8. So inspiring! Thanks for your post. I need reminding. :)

  9. Great post and ideas, and congrats on Freshly Pressed! I’ve been wanting to tackle a new baking project lately, maybe I’ll make some tiramisu this weekend :)

this is a philosophy I live by! adding and checking off items on my bucket list help!

  11. hi i completely agree with you! this year i set myself a task to do 1 new thing every month for a year so that each new month brings a new adventure, no matter how small. i use my blog as a sort of online diary so that i can share and reflect on each new task and see what an eventful year i’m having :)

    • midlifemeg says:

This is a great idea! I am going to make that a goal, too! Blogging makes me do new things so that I have something interesting to write about, but I really like the idea of one new thing a month. :)

    • This is a wonderful idea! I try to do at least a few new things a year, and the blog keep me accountable. Putting what you’ve done down in words (and in pictures) really makes it feel real and brings about that sense of accomplishment. :)

  12. seaswift says:

I love the philosophy behind your post. I’ve been making a big effort to try new things recently. Two months ago, I took up ceroc and I’m loving it. Next I tried indoor climbing. Then I took an online couture course. Next week I’m going to a jazz club for the first time. New experiences become addictive!

  13. Beautiful, practical sentiment — I love this post!

Today, I visited a 125-year-old home, interviewed the owners — and now I’m about to write a story about the experience for a regional magazine. As I was being escorted around the home, I kept thinking to myself, “The conversations these walls have heard…” It definitely put things in perspective for me — regarding my town, our connection to history, life in general. Definitely a first…
    :)

    • Gauri Pathak says:

I would love to read your story about this 125year old home..They say that homes made of stones capture the vibrations of sound for years..u are right the walls must have definitely heard a lot of conversations for all these years…look forward to your story

    • That sounds absolutely incredible! Most of the homes where I am have been built within the past 30 years, so I can’t even imagine what it would be live to be surrounded by walls that had seen so many generations. If only walls could speak… I’m sure your article will be interesting, both for you to write and for readers to enjoy. Keep up the firsts! :)

  14. You have opened my eyes to a new idear. I like the blog and what you pushed us to try and do. Not try do it. Thanks for the shove.

  15. Julianna says:

I find that the reason we (adults) often don’t do new things is the discomfort factor…discomfort of not knowing what we’re doing – which really translates to a not-being-in-control sense (and/or being embarrassed). Kids are fabulous because they don’t get held up by these things. Regardless – talk about an opportunity to stretch! Not to mention: if we don’t do new things, we stay exactly where we are (and how many people are floating around proclaiming they’re thoroughly thrilled with their life?). Great post – thanks!

  16. marionl23 says:

Your post opened me up to new adventures. I turn 65 in nov and need a new deriction for my life. I took up writing a few months back and enjoyed. now on to something else to keep the mind going. I’ll check it off the bucket list i have. thanks for the shove.

I started a blog on WordPress for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I was full of “well I really should do something”s, but never did anything. I want to motivate myself to produce something once a week and maybe even incorporate some exciting activities into the mix. Take a look at my blog wew.jonnydoodle.wordpress.com to see where I’m starting from.

    • That’s awesome! I started this blog about two years ago – just to try something new, and I ended up loving it and sticking with it. Your blog looks great – keep up the good work! :)

  18. So inspirational, thanks. I have just realised that this is the first time, I have left a comment on someones blog. Youv’e got me going already ;)

This is an excellent recipe for Aging Gracefully. Love you post.

    • Thank you! I agree – keeping your mind and body busy and learning is the best way to keep growing, rather than deteriorating as you age. Think young and you’ll stay young. :)

I love it! I’ve spent this past week deciding to live “on purpose” this summer with my girls. This means I plan activities to do together daily, science experiments, art, fun activities to go with our read aloud, a picnic and scavenger hunt up in one our gorgeous canyons…I’m trying to do something new with them daily. Today my 6 year old said “Thank you for planning fun activities this summer, mom!” It melted my heart and made me realize how important all these seemingly little things are. It doesn’t have to be expensive to be new and a great experience! Great post! Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!

    • This is fantastic! My parents did the same for me and my siblings growing up, and some of those silly and cheap experiment and experiences are some of my fondest memories. Exploring the world and learning new things really is what makes life worth living. Thanks! :)

  25. Jane says:

You got me thinking, too! Thanks for the inspiration and good luck with the veggies!

  26. Hi Erin. I really enjoyed this post of yours! I love those reminders to go out and take charge of life! I’m in quite a funk now as I await that next big moment in life–whatever that may be.

I really like the bullet-list you spelled out on the different areas to work on. I think most of us focus solely on just one–maybe two–of those areas to the exclusion of all others, leaving many feeling empty. Actually, this is how I’m currently feeling, so I’m already guilty!

Anyways, like you, I enjoy trying new things and am constantly signing up for new classes to take. It’s a great way to keep your mind fresh and to spark that creativity which mostly lies dormant.

Summer’s only just begun, and I already feel myself in the dumps! Time to pick myself up and try something new!

    • I’ve been a bit of a funk lately as well, so I can relate, Keeping busy certainly helps. I think really breaking down what you can and should do is a good place to start so you don’t get overwhelming by all the options or discouraged because you don’t know where to begin. Good luck trying something new and sparking your creativity! Thanks for the thoughtful comment! :)

  27. Really, really like this post. It’s been a while since I did something for the first time and now I’m starting to examine what I have done and what I could do.

    • I think we often get so stuck in our routines that we don’t even notice when we do something new, or recognize opportunities to try something else. Even just being mindful can really help. I hope you think up a great new activity! :)

    You have inspired me!

My husband is an actor, and he’s going to Medieval Times to audition tomorrow. They’re also auditioning for the Princess. I joked that I’d go, though I have little to no acting experience, and I’m really too short to be a Princess….but I want to try something new. I’m going!

Love your writing style, thank you for blogging. :)

This past Monday I went Yurting on the Oregon coast with my little girl. Our “camping” as the two of us was a first as well as I’ve never been in a Yurt. But honestly, every time I log into my wordpress account I find new “firsts” with each posts: finding the stats page or reader (6 months and I found it, lol) what tags are, how to save an adobe photoshopped photo for the web…I like to call it “running the hills” as I find as I challenge myself, I do find parts of myself that were otherwise unnoticed in pushing the boundaries of the self one I’ve always known. I’m so glad to see the “flow” psychology in this, I saw a documentary called “the happy movie” and it talked about flow. The more we tap into it, the happier we are as we make choices, doing in alignment with our true self; we all are creators/dynamic beings capable of just about anything.

    • I had to look up a “yurt” and it sounds like such a fun experience! I’ll be up in Portland this coming weekend, so I’m looking forward to all sorts of new experiences up in the beautiful Northwest. I love your point of continually discovering new “firsts” because I’m the same way, and the smallest things excite me. Pushing yourself to your limits and beyond is the best way to live. I love the concept of “flow” – I studied Positive Psychology in college and have read every book on the subject (I can give recommendations, if you’re interested), so I’ll have to check out “The Happy Movie” too. It’s so true – figure out who you are and what you love, and then pursue those things with all that you are and you can achieve anything. Thanks for such a thoughtful comment. :)

      • Kristy says:

I live in Portland :) I hope you enjoy your stay! I had never gone “yurting” before either, growing up in Montana it was camping in tents or our family cabin. I would love recommendations for books on “flow”. Be well, Erin!

  30. Great post. A reminder that sometimes we really do have to stop and think what we’re doing and question why we do it

  31. Ivynettle says:

Tuesday: first time going to a travel agency, first time booking a flight (and also first time saying, “hey, remember me?” because I recognized the employee I was talking to – usually I’m too shy to say anything.
Yesterday: first time writing the very first letter to a new penpal – so far, it’s always been the other person writing the very first letter and getting the conversation started.
Those might be small things, but they’re scary enough for me – and when I think I’m supposed to teach medieval dance, dance in public and fly on my own later this year – eek! Definitely challenging myself!

    • I’m so proud of you! I’m shy, so those types of things would scare me a bit too. Doesn’t it feel great to overcome those little fears? Good luck with all your endeavors! :)

  32. I really like this article! Fantastic advice, and really well said. Cheers to you!

  33. Nicolle says:

Always good to remember to try new things and disrupt the routine.
Just two weeks ago, I took an acrylic landscape art class with my mom, aunt, and cousin. It’s the second time we’ve taken an art class together and it’s becoming something of a tradition.

    • That sounds like so much fun! It’s sometimes scary to take that first step, but the sense of accomplishment is so worth it. Disrupting the routine is almost always a good idea.

  34. pinkcamojeep says:

What a grand post, Erin. I love your enthusiasm for life and the fact that you want to get down to the “meat” of the matter (I read around a bit).

Ya know, I did something for the first time just Saturday. I went to a gathering at a local lake. The man who opened his home had a jet ski and I got to ride on a jet ski for the first time in my life. I’m 48 years old … but just don’t know any friends who own jet skis and have never rented one.

It was SO much fun to zoom circles around the lake, so close to the water (closer than a boat) and faster than my kayak will carry me. The skies were crystal blue with sparse cotton-candy clouds, the water was a gorgeous emerald green. I’ll remember that afternoon for years to come, I’m sure …. simply because
    it was my first time.

Thanks for asking the question and
    challenging us to
    do something new.

    Blessings,

    -|<@ren
    (pinkcamojeep)

    • Thank you so much!
Jet skiing is such a fun experience! I’ve been twice while on vacation, although I’ve never driven one myself, which would be an entirely new experience. Your description is incredible, and I’m sure you will remember it. All the best to you! :)

  35. Last night I flew as a passenger in a Cessna over Fort McMurray and the Oil Sands. I can now check “Fly on small aircraft off my bucket list.” It was thrilling!

  36. great post! this year has been all about my stepping through my fear (False Evidence Appearing Real) and living full-out. it’s been great! i’m finding myself looking for more ways to get uncomfortable and grow.

Great post!! To start putting it into practice I might drive here in Malta, since I have never drove in the right side of the car. :) )

  38. Jay says:

Thanks for the read! I like trying new things although I am surprisingly shy. Over the last few years between my friends and my boyfriend I’ve tried ball dancing, paintball, belly dancing, white water rafting and ice skating. I am going to have plenty stories to tell in my old age!

    • I’m also shy, but I think that make the whole “trying something new” feel like even more of an accomplishment. Those all sound like such fun – it sounds like you’re racking up tons of great stories. Keep it up! :)

  39. gamesfemme says:

Great post! I definitely find that I am most happy when I am trying new things. I’m one of those people who can never wear the same hat for too long, even if it means taking risks to change up my life. Thanks for these inspirational words. :)

  42. My husband & I went to the Stardome Observatory & Planetarium for our wedding anniversary. We normally go visit family in Australia but we’ve already done that this year so we tried something new. It cost $10 to see a showing but it was free to look around. Check out the photo here: http://sharlenesmith.wordpress.com/2012/06/29/one-small-step-for-man-three-steps-up-for-sharlene/

    • That’s so neat! I love going to planetariums and observatories – seeing the universe through a telescope is such an incredible experience. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary. :)

      • Thanks Erin. We normally go overseas for a wee holiday but having already been to Australia earlier in the year we decided to do something different. I definitely encourage people to try something new once & often. This week I have taken up Lomography, a new photography experience.

  43. Wonderful post! My husband makes fun of me for always picking up new hobbies and he frequently points towards the cupboard of unused cake decorating supplies while asking me how much money I am going to spend on the next new “thing.” I’m so glad someone understands how invigorating it can be to learn a new skill.

    • Invigorating is the perfect word! I take up all sort of new hobbies all the time too, and although most fade there are some that I stick with (blogging, for example) and it’s entirely worth the effort of exploring options and trying new things.

  45. Jean says:

Good question to pause and ponder. I went on a super slow group bike ride with people who didn’t wear cycling clothing. That was last weekend.

My whole being though ,for past 2 years, has been trying to cope with trying alot of new things for first time and not necessarily in the way that I want it: living in Alberta for first time, or living in the prairies for first time @50+ yrs. is a HUGE switch for me, cycling in -25 degrees C winter cold this past winter (wasn’t so bad), eating bison reuben sandwiches delicious, eating saskatoon berries (earthy, nice), switching to a job unlike my other previous jobs in last 30 yrs., copihg with death of sister and now dying father (from cancer), etc.

So you can see why I jump onto my bike and escape for a few hrs., of blissful ever-changing scenery where I don’t have to actively engage..but pass by, sometimes stopping to take photos.

Trying new things often is great, as long as a person is also rooted in their values, identity (knowing who they are and who shaped them) and vision.

    • Those are great points. Trying new things is a great way to cope with trying times or new situations, and also best if they are in alignment with your values and interests. Thanks for your comment. :)

Yes, I will do this! ‘Eliminate the phrase, “I’m bored” from your vocabulary.’

I super agree with: ‘There is so much to see, learn, and experience.’

Please compile your ideas and the things you have done in another blog post… let’s share ideas!

PS. Congrats on the zucchini and for making FP!

    • Spontaneity keeps me sane too – it really keeps life fun and exciting.
I will definitely consider sharing some of my new adventures in future blog post and share ideas. Thanks! :)

  50. Excellent post, congratulations. I try to do new things all the time, it is fantastic how it gives you so much to look forward to but also to look back to. • It’s amazing how you can get lost in time while in the midst of some great creative endeavor. I checked out the gardening advice you shared – thank you! :)

      • Hope it’s helpful to you. I had 5 of my garden cherry tomatoes in my salad for dinner tonight. Last night I had spaghetti with garlic, butter, and sage leaves from my garden. Just the sage leaves, not the butter. But it sure would be nice to grow butter in the garden at the rate I eat it!! : – D

Living abroad there is an abundance of opportunities for “firsts.” Just now I ordered contact lenses over the phone in Japanese for the first time. May not sound like much to most people, but even the littlest stuff like that becomes a big deal in a different language, adrenaline rush included. I hang up the phone and look around, wondering why the others aren’t as impressed with my accomplishment as I am, hahaha. Taking yourself out of your comfort zone is a good way to up your “first times.” :D

    • Stepping outside your comfort zone is certainly a great way to encounter lots of new “firsts”. I’m hoping to live abroad at some point, and am looking forward to all those little everyday experiences that will be so new to me. Thanks for sharing your story – that made me smile. :)

  68. engchick23 says:

I completely understand what you mean! Yesterday, I drove to an interview in a big city 2 hours away, all by myself! I was scared to death and it was blazing hot, but I never let go of my printed directions and prayed like crazy that I wouldn’t get lost! And you know what? I only had to pause three times: twice because I took a wrong street, errors easily mended, and once to ask directions to my turn-off. My dad had offered to drive me since he knows the area well, but I’m so glad I went by myself!

I don’t want to do it again, but I feel much more confident about myself because I tried and was successful. I gained a confidence in my navigation abilities, of course (I have a particular talent for getting lost while driving), but also just in how I see myself. I’ve conquered something (with God’s help!) and I think if I take another long trip, I will feel a lot less anxious about it.

Thanks so much for sharing your encouragement and optimism! :D

    • Thanks for sharing! Don’t you just love how little things like successfully driving somewhere new can give you such a boost? I’m so proud of you. I tend to get lost too, but I try to just make the most of it and learn from the experience.

  69. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed and on the amazing post. I usually don’t do this but I wanted to share a post I just wrote recently because it is so similar to what you are saying here. You can check it out (http://unboxedlife.wordpress.com/2012/06/16/the-power-of-trying-new-things/) and let me know what you think if you want. 77. This got me thinking! Thanks for this great reminder.. I’ve been stuck in a deadly routine lately and I need something new in my life.. Thanks again for the reminder! Meaningful and inspiring site you have here! :D

  78. Thanks for those sweet words of wisdom!

  79. Awesome! Great encouragement to live a life that is actually lived. Thank you!

I just can’t understand when people say that they’re bored! How?! There’s so much to do in life! And in terms of doing something new, I found that travelling really helped in that there’s no real routine and familiarity… Cheers for the post. Enjoyed.

  81. So many of us shy away from fresh experiences just in case we fail (me being one of them). I feel like I need to print out your post and stick it to my wall to remind me to get out of my comfort zone and try something new!

    • Fear of failure is definitely one of the biggest deterrents when it comes to trying new things. However, we often forget that even when we fail, we’ve still learned and at least “attempted” something new, which is something to be proud of, as well.

  82. i appreciate your saying that the something new need not be big or spectacular or drastic, just something you/we haven’t done before, something we could try our hands on… simple message yet so powerful. many thanks and regards… ;)

  83. Roshni says:

I always try to do something new, it doesn’t always happen but atleast I try! :) Right now, I’m going to join my first job in a new city… So that’s a first for me! :) Looking forward to it. I’ve already eliminated ‘bored’ from my life…atleast for now…

  84. Great post! I totally agree with you. I started going to acting classes in March and slowly grew in confident. And now I’m blogging! Something I never thought I would do. Learning new things is the best way to have fun.

  85. I love this post – trying something new is also a great exercise for perfectionists. I’ve recently taken a mediation class and took up Masters swimming. I learned about my strokes etc. but also a lot about myself! Never stop learning and laughing and growing as a person. http://wp.me/p1JB1m-cM Great blog.

    • As a perfectionist myself, I completely agree. Letting go of that need for control can be a challenge, but it is also liberating and a simply wonderful feeling. I agree – “Never stop learning and laughing and growing as a person.” Thanks!

My last first experience was just a month ago when I spent 5 days backpacking in Yosemite! It was amazing and life changing. I hiked to the top of Half Dome which was challenging, engaging, and the most awe inspiring adventure. I love “new” and complacency is no way to live. Get out, enjoy life. Scare yourself ;)

  90. I actually don’t know – good question. However I don’t think it was too long ago. I suppose I don’t realize it is something new.

    • I think sometimes we get so caught up in things that we don’t pay attention to the little things that could be seen as new and exciting – it’s interesting to think about.

I’ve never read your blog before, and I did enjoy it! I posted something today on the fleetingness of life, based on some stuff written around the death of Nora Ephron and some comments made by Ricky Gervais. You might like it. Maybe you could read my blog for the firs time too! (bethsaysboo.wordpress)

  97. My next first is moving to a country where I have never been, don’t speak the language and where I have rented an apartment for a whole year. The move will happen tomorrow: http://andreasmoser.wordpress.com/2012/06/18/moving-to-lithuania/ – I am nervous.

  98. Some of the firsts that I have planned for the rest of 2012: Go camping in a tent. Ride a motorcycle. Go on a cruise. Go tubing. Win NaNoWriMo.

Awesome post! :D Keep up the good writing!

    • Those sound like so much fun! Have you participated in NaNoWriMo before? I won last year and it’s my proudest accomplishment to date. :)

      • Ooh, Congratulations!

Yes, I participated last year, but then my job got really busy and I started saying things like, “I’ll just make up for this week this weekend…”

But this year I plan to win! :)

Very inspiring post. The title suggests a comment and the material provokes a response. So, here’s mine:

Recently,. I moved abroad to teach in Korea. I’ve been trying to get my writing career more on track with published articles (Outside magazine soon). Also, I’ve tried numerous foods (some gross, some great), traveling to the Philippines to island hop, learning the Android App/Google Play software and writing through a new website (Say Kimchi). Oh, and trying to learn Korean (I’ve heard it’s easy lol).

Tons of new things right now…and I’d like to keep it that way (sounds redundant).

Just exactly what I can relate to. Has been considering so much about traveling on my own. So finally, I book a tix and decided to choose to stay in a dorm. To Bangkok, alone. Despite hasn’t been there before (or even being far away on my own) and hearing words saying that it’s dangerous for a small girl like me to go, I venture on. It’s my first time doing this and right now, I’m on my last night. Words can’t describe the amazing experience I had for the past 2 days in a foreign land. Thank you for the post (:

  112. pattyabr says:

For me, cooking is a first almost every time I attempt a new recipe. Most recipes are about that are interesting or challenging are about technique. There are thousands of techniques. My cooking club is all about trying something new for the first time. I made ice cream in an ice bath. That was a first. Maybe I’m different from the typical person. When you have kids they allow you to experience a “first” something almost daily. Routine is to bring balance when everyone around you is experiencing their “first” at something. I like routine but I like breaking out and doing something new or challenging almost daily. Life is too short not to.

    • Life certainly is too short not to at least attempt to do all you can. Cooking and being around kids is a wonderful way to bring lots of new firsts into your life. Making ice cream in an ice bath sounds like an exciting experience – I’ll have to try it sometime. :)

  118. Good post true many of us are too afraid to try new things and settle with changing the channel on the TV for a change. We need to go out and try new things and not be afraid. Challenge for some: improve your life erase your fears when I was younger I imposed on myself to conquer my fear of the dark by stranding myself in dark scary places and resisting every urge to look around to make sure I was safe or to run instead walking so slowly out looking ahead occasionally stopping and taking a deep breath of the air in there after awhile my fear was gone. And felt a better person

    • You’re absolutely right – trying new things and conquering fears really can go hand-in-hand. It’s great that you challenged yourself and were able to come out a better person. :)

  119. Agree! You know what they say, “You only live once.”

  124. My next first will be a week-long trail ride, complete with camping out and caring for two horses away from their comfy stable. It’s a surreal sort of excitement combined with heart skipping bouts of educated anxiety. I love going places I’ve never gone, even if its just driving down a country road I’ve seen a dozen times in passing. Please drop in for a first time visit to http://www.keziahcarrie.com you never know what you might find. :-) Loved your post…all of it so very true! We forget sometimes how to have fun.

  125. Oops forgot to mention we also did a garden this year. We were absolutely amazed when a tiny little zucchini one day, was twice its size the next. And your skull drawing is excellent!!

  126. I love trying new things. I first rode a horse at 45 yrs….. first backpacked at 50….first blogged at 53……currently taking an Adobe Photoshop class. But my real goal this summer is to learn to JUST BE…that will be a first for me. I’m always too busy, trying to packing something into every minute of the day. Time to see where my new slow vibe takes me…….

    • Good for you for taking on so many new opportunities to learn! Those all sound great, and I agree that learning to JUST BE is one of the best, yet most challenging tasks out there. Good luck on your journey!

  127. Chelle says:

I really loved this! I’ve never been one to try new things, but I wanna be! Even more so after reading this(: Trying new things is important. The worst that could happen is that you’d find out you don’t like a particular thing, but that’s ok. I’d rather figure out that I don’t like something than to just go on wondering. I think it’s a good way to learn more about yourself! Thanks for posting!(:

    • Exactly – trying something new is a great way to discover new hobbies and interests. I never would have guessed that I’d enjoy gardening or be decent at drawing, but since trying them I’ve grown fond of each. Good luck with trying new things!

  128. Wow, what a great post! I’m really into goal setting, but I often pass up spur-of-the-moment things, simply because they sound different. This post has reminded me to say yes to everything (well almost)! Thanks so much :)

Great post! And I definitely agree learning that learning something new is really rewarding, for me, especially if it’s art related. :)

  132. This is a great article. I feel inspired to continue to try something new for the first time on a daily basis. I always make it a rule regardless of where I am , or who I am with to expand and challenge my horizons by remaining open and receptive to new stimuli. An example this year for my birthday I tried eel and caviar for the first time. It’s a great feeling to know that there are people like yourself who views the world with an open mind. Thank you once more.

    • My parents always encouraged me to expand my horizons, so that’s stuck with me. Being open to new experiences is a great way to go through life. There’s so much to see and do if you have an open mind. Thanks for taking the time to comment. :)

      • Erin, I definitely concur and practice the same discipline hence why creative beings attract similar minds. Additionally, the mind is like a parachute, it works best when it is open. Thank you for your wonderful posts :-D

  134. Shaggygirl says:

Great post! I love learning new things but it is so easy to get stuck in a rut. It’s particularly wonderful looking back at the year at all the things you tried – for me I tried things like tap dancing, salsa, traveled to a country I never expected to go to and a few other things. I have to admit I am shy of the more artistic things because I have no ability whatsoever but I guess that doesn’t matter right – as long as you enjoy yourself?

  135. marellasunny says:

Two ears ago I went for it and moved from the UK to Dubai, then last year came to Brussels, decided to write a blog and then thought I might like two, took a job teaching in school where I don’t speak the language thus needed French lessons and to top it all decided a MEd might be worth a go!

I LOVE this post, it is quite inspiring! When I think back to when I was at my happiest, it was the 7 days my husband, two kids, and I, spent in Yellowstone camping and sightseeing. If I could feel so happy and carefree like that everyday, life would always be an adventure. I did make the leap just recently and started my own blog. I enjoy writing, and I’ve wanted to do this for years, but fear hindered me. I’m conquering that fear, however, and I’m working on my 3rd post. Thanks for inspiring me!

  196. Love the attitude! Yes you have to make things happen for yourself! Bravo!

  199. I apply the same principle when I go shopping. I always try and drop into the basket something that I’ve never tried before. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just new. I’ve found many new taste sensations that way and my lunch break at work is never dull.

That’s the reason why I am so fond of travelling… Everyday you do something for the first time! Recently I have been on TV in Uruguay to promote an NGO, it was a quite funny experience :D

Holy number of comments – way to go on your post! There’s a great book on flow that you might enjoy if you haven’t come across it already: Flow: the Psychology of Optimal Experience.

    • Thanks for the comment! I actually studied Psychology in college with a focus in Positive/Happiness Psych, so I have read read every book and study out there on the topic. It’s such a wonderful and enlightening concept isn’t it? Happiness is so much easier to come by than we often realize.

  202. Congrats on Freshly Press! Love your blog. Things I’ve done for the first time…go on a Gypsy Journey to experience the goodness of others having only a destination in mind, took a hot air balloon ride, attend the Vallejo, Ca 4th of July parade and attended a day-long meditation retreat at Spirit Rock Meditation Retreat Center in Woodacre, CA…love experiencing all life has to offer!
But never growing a garden yet, something to look forward too.

I remember studying psychology where my one lecturer encouraged us to walk/drive a different route to our destinations as often as possible. To keep your mind fresh and out of the rut.

The idea stuck with me, and I think it’s all part of mindful living.

  204. I am a creature of repetitive monotony. There are days when the coffee practically brews itself as the espresso machine creates a warming wake up call.
But…my family just took a vacation to the mountains of Tennessee. This was a first! Now that we are home we can’t wait to go back. Thanks for the wonderful read.

I have experienced some great “first”! One in particular that I frequently recall took place during my first sea fishing trip with a special someone, when I apparently experienced beginners luck and caught a legal 20-something inch trout (cannot recall the exact length). Boy oh boy was he a fighter; however in the end, after a short lived battle by my fishing companion and the help of a net, the swimmer was overpowered and pulled on-board. That was the day I caught my first fish. I hope you enjoy reading this re-blogged article and decide that you need more “firsts” in your life.

Love this post! It is exactly how I try to live my life :) I simple cannot understand how anyone can be bored, with so many things to do and see! Everyone should have firsts frequently. Great blog, will be coming back!

Came across this post today, and think it is worthy of sharing…The message is simple, something we should all always strive to do…yet so difficult because falling into routine is so easy. We are creatures of habit. Keep your mind sharp, and nurture your imagination and creativity. Explore a new interest as often as you can, especially something you find intimidating or challenging! Those can be the most rewarding because we do not think we can succeed or excel in them…yet we often do not know our own strengths and capabilities. Exploring any new interest can help you realize what type of work you really wish to do in life, and potential you may have not known you even possessed…finding that could make a difference in not only your life, but how you do your work. Certainly you will apply yourself more if you enjoy your work. So, get to it! Find something new to try and do today.

  208. hmmm,

My next first is a tough one. I have been so caught up in the daily routine lately that I have not spent much time going outside that. Thanks for the insights, and I will keep thinking about what my next first should be

Love the idea of making it a goal to try new things! I recently had a baby so my world is nothing but firsts right now! I can see how it is easy to fall into a rut though: parenthood is exhausting! We recently went on our first roadtrip as a family of three, and it was interesting for sure :)

  210. Inspiring and creative post. I’ve allways been thinking I’d love to challenge myself, stepping out of the comfortszone, but never to do it just for the fun of it. And even make the goal just to do it could be a challenge. Challenging oneself to enjoy something.

Wonderful food for thought. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed, too!

  212. Love this. Reminds me of a question I asked my husband a few days ago.

What’s that vine looking plant growing in the window box of the balcony?
    Pastèque came the response.
    Who planted that?
    One of the children.

Pastèque is the french word for watermelon and it appears we have one growing in a small window box on the balcony in among a rainbow of flowers. Have to say that’s a first for me, I shall be watching to see what evolves.

  213. Good post – only just found it. More to the point, when was the first time you did something for the last time. And how would you know?

Inspirational article. And congrats on your garden. This spring was the first time I got zucchinis planted as well. Yesterday I picked a couple of them – it was the first time we baked our own zucchinis :) I also like your idea of taking classes on some new subject. Today I had a short brainstorming session with my gf on what we’d enjoy doing. We didn’t really come up with anything new, just kinda summarized the things that were already in our heads for quite some time. Going to a course or a workshop seems like a good chance to come up with something new.
